Software and Hardware Tips

If you want to only pass simplex data, no voice, then connect the RX and TX wires of the data port together. Put the D-STAR radio into Auto Transmit mode. It will hear the data, load it into it's buffer, then retransmit the data when the channel is clear.

AE7Q Software

D-StarLet  is a web-based text messaging application using ICOM's D-Star digital data technology. For more information, including a description of features, a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, & download information, see the D-StarLet  web page.

D-StarTerm  is a stand-alone Java Amateur Radio monitor & terminal program using ICOM's D-Star digital data technology, packaged in a DStarTerm.zip file containing the application .JAR (Java Archive). This program is under development (feature incomplete), but appears to work. You will need Sun Microsystems' Java JRE (Java Runtime Environment) version 1.5 or later (about 85 MB of disk space), installed on either Win 98SE or higher, a recent Linux/Unix system, or Apple's Mac OS 10.1 or later.

NJ6N Chat
D-STAR Chat or d*Chat is a simple application that enables you to type in a line of text that is sent through the attached D-STAR radio when you click the SEND button or hit the RETURN key. The application does not currently support any form of error correction or flow-control. If a transmission is missed by the receiving party, it may be recalled and re-sent by the sender. Only the last-line sent can be recalled.

DStarTNC2 is a Java application which provides a bridge between APRS clients and low-speed ports of the D-STAR radios.
DStarTNC2 also has a TCP/IP port that provides a direct path to and from the serial port.  This can be used by a telnet client or any other TCP/IP client to send and receive data to and from the D-STAR serial port.

D-PRS Interface for Windows at http://www.aprs-is.net/downloads /dstar/DPRSInterface.zip
This is a much simpler to install and use application than DStarTNC2 (run the installer, configure your callsign, and you are up and running). It is fully compatible with D-PRS as implemented on DStarTNC2 and javAPRSSrvr. It also provides a terminal window which can be used to access the serial port directly or via a "chat" mode giving error detected chat capabilities without a separate program.

Tim, K7TRP figured out a great way to use Kenwood D7A and D700 cables for the data cables on most of the ICOM D-STAR radios.

Get a null modem adapter and put it in series with the Kenwood cable.
Null modem adapters are cheaper than ICOM cables:)
